Trucks collide, shut down I-81

Friday, November 19, 2004
From staff reports

A collision of tractor-trailers carrying ketchup and orange juice Wednesday night injured both drivers and shut down Interstate 81 for more than three hours in East Hanover Twp.

James Haun, 45, of Strasburg, Va., was listed in critical condition yesterday in the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center after his southbound rig crossed into the northbound lanes of I-81 and collided with another rig driven by Wesley Hunter, 46, of Clementon, N.J., at 10:27 p.m. Wednesday, according to authorities.

Hunter was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

One lane of I-81 was closed most of the morning yesterday for cleanup.

The crash was the second accident involving multiple rigs in the area in the past two days.

About 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, about 14 miles east of the site of Wednesday night's crash, two rigs collided on Interstate 78 in Bethel Twp., Berks County, backing up traffic for several miles.

In that accident, a truck driven by Charles Corbett, 61, of Asbury Park, N.J., drifted off the road and hit the rear of a truck parked on the eastbound berm, police said.

As Corbett's truck began to burn, he was helped from the cab by Raymond Trautman, 37, of Bethlehem, the driver of the parked truck.

Police said Corbett had minor injuries and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was treated and released.
